A biking tour of our wonderful South-West. Coast, moorland and the best traffic-free riding going.
This journey is shaped by the stories that built the South West. Old railway lines now carry cyclists instead of steam engines. Estuaries trace routes once used for trade and industry. Moorland roads cross ground worked, walked, and travelled for centuries. From North Devon’s working coastline to the granite heart of Dartmoor and on towards Cornwall, each day follows paths that have long connected people and place. We ride through landscapes where history is present without being preserved behind glass, arriving in towns that still feel purposeful and lived in. Paired with characterful hotels and well judged pacing, the journey unfolds as a continuous narrative, one chapter leading naturally into the next.

Itinerary
Day 1 – North Devon Coastlines
We meet at Tiverton Parkway and transfer west to Ilfracombe for lunch, easing into the journey with sea air and harbour views. In the afternoon, the cycling begins along the North Devon coast, passing some of the region’s most celebrated surf beaches. The Atlantic is never far away, and the riding feels fresh and invigorating. We finish in Barnstaple, where a comfortable hotel and a relaxed evening await.
Day 2 – The Tarka Trail
We join the Tarka Trail, a beautifully surfaced, traffic free route following the Taw and Torridge estuaries through Bideford and Great Torrington. The trail takes its name from Tarka the Otter, the famous novel by Henry Williamson. The landscape opens and closes gently, with water views and wildlife along the way. It is cycling that encourages conversation as we ride. We end the day in Hatherleigh, where the inn atmosphere sets the tone for a convivial evening.
Day 3 – Up and onto Dartmoor
Leaving the trail behind, we turn inland and climb gradually onto Dartmoor. The landscape changes quickly. Open skies, granite tors, and quiet roads define the day. Lunch is taken in the lively moorland town of Chagford before a rewarding afternoon ride across the moors and down into Tavistock. This is one of the most memorable riding days of the journey, both scenic and satisfying.
Day 4 – Drake’s Trail and the Call of the Sea
The final ride in Devon follows Drake’s Trail – named after Sir Francis Drake, one of Plymouth’s most famous historical figures – this former railway line turned cycling route delivers a largely downhill run into Plymouth. We pause at the Mayflower Steps, where the Pilgrims set sail for the New World, before continuing along the coast to Tinside Lido. A swim here is optional but irresistible for many. From the water’s edge, we transfer north into Cornwall, arriving in Padstow with the harbour lights flickering.
Day 5 – The Camel Trail and Padstow
The final ride is an easy out and back along the Camel Trail, another former railway line that now follows the river inland. The pace is unhurried, perfect for reflecting on the journey as boats drift past and the estuary narrows gently. Back in Padstow, the afternoon is free to explore the harbour, coastal paths, and small shops that give the town its character. This evening, we dine together, bringing the journey to a close over good food and shared memories.
Day 6 – Farewells
After breakfast, it is time to depart, or to extend your stay in Cornwall. Coastal walks, quiet beaches, and slow mornings are all within easy reach.
