Handpicked Accommodation

The Balmoral Arms, Ballater

A classic Scottish coaching inn with Victorian bones, Ballater holds a Royal Warrant and has long served guests visiting nearby Balmoral.

Why we chose it

This is a hotel that knows how to look after people properly. Service is smooth and the welcome is genuine.

Dunkeld House Hotel, Dunkeld

Very much a grand country house hotel. Dunkeld House is set among woodland on the banks of the River Tay, Scotland’s longest river.

Why we chose it

A fitting setting to close this Scottish journey.

The Dowans Hotel, Aberlour

This contemporary Highland hotel with relaxed interiors has an excellent whisky bar and a dining room that takes refuelling seriously.

Why we chose it

The hotel sits in the heart of Speyside, home to over half of Scotland’s malt whisky distilleries

Itinerary

We meet at Inverness Airport and transfer into the heart of Speyside. Bikes are built, fitted and checked before heading out for a gentle warm up ride along the Speyside Way. The riding is easy and scenic, following the river and easing everyone into the week. We cross the elegant Thomas Telford bridge at Craigellachie before rolling back into Aberlour. A first dram in the bar sets the tone, followed by a hearty group dinner and an early night.
Distance: 15 miles

Today is a classic Speyside loop. Rolling terrain links the stone villages of Dufftown and Charlestown of Aberlour, with short, punchy climbs to test your legs. Distilleries appear around almost every bend, copper stills catching the light between stretches of open countryside. We return to Aberlour by mid-afternoon and head out into the village for dinner, keeping things relaxed and local.
Distance: 45 miles

We leave Speyside and head south, facing the climb of The Lecht. It is one of Scotland’s toughest ascents, with a 20% ramp that will test your gearing. The reward is a miles-long descent into Royal Deeside, finishing in the Victorian village of Ballater.
Distance: 38 miles

We explore the magnificent pine forests of the Balmoral Estate. The riding here is smoother and faster, looping around the River Dee. We’ll stop for coffee and cake at a cyclist-favorite bakery in Braemar before cruising back to Ballater.
Distance: 35 miles

Today we tackle the “Cairnwell Pass.” As the highest main road in the UK, it’s a bucket-list climb for any serious cyclist. For those wanting a lighter day, there is an option to ride the flat valley floor towards Aboyne, or simply take a rest day to explore the royal station in town.

We transfer south to escape the mountains and drop into the lush, green “Big Tree Country” of Perthshire. The ride starts in the remote Sma’ Glen, following the river downstream to the historic cathedral town of Dunkeld. The hotel sits right on the riverbank—perfect for a post-ride stretch.

Our final day is a “hidden gems” loop around the Perthshire lochs. We’ll ride past the shimmering waters of Loch of the Lowes and Butterstone, on quiet backroads with almost zero traffic. We return to the hotel for a celebratory farewell dinner overlooking the River Tay.

After a full Scottish breakfast, transfer to Edinburgh Airport for onward connections.

This is the tour I come back to when I want to remember why Scotland delivers such fantastic road riding.
