A classic walking journey through the soul of Yorkshire.

Stunning scenery. Warm welcomes. This is Yorkshire. We stitch the county’s greatest hits into a seamless walking journey, starting in the green heart of the Dales, rolling through waterfalls, abbeys and market towns, then finishing with a flourish on the North Sea coast. Every pub is chosen carefully (quite the task, seeing as there’s nearly 3000 of them in Yorkshire!) and every walk is paced for pleasure as much as scenery. This classic walking journey is designed to let Yorkshire reveal itself, step by step, in good company.

Highlights

  • Gentle to moderate guided walks through Wharfedale, Wensleydale, Coverdale and Nidderdale
  • Iconic waterfalls, including Hardraw Force, England’s highest single-drop waterfall
  • Private visit to Castle Bolton with insider context
  • Steam train journey on the North York Moors Railway
  • Coastal walking from Whitby Abbey to Robin Hood’s Bay
  • Handpicked inns that feel rooted, relaxed and genuinely welcoming

Itinerary

Meet your guide at Harrogate station and head west into the Yorkshire Dales, where dry stone walls begin to pattern the landscape and time slows almost immediately. We drop into Grassington for lunch. Once a bustling lead mining town, today the only rush is the river and the occasional walker passing by. This afternoon’s walk is through Wharfedale. Expect rolling pastures, limestone outcrops and riverside paths.

Following a morning transfer into Wensleydale our walk links two waterfalls together – Cotter Force and the dramatic plunge of Hardraw Force, where water falls cleanly over limestone into a shadowed amphitheatre. Hardraw Force is England’s highest single drop waterfall, plunging over 30 metres straight down from the limestone cliff above. Lunch at the Wensleydale Creamery celebrates the dale’s most famous flavours. The afternoon layers in history and character with a visit to Castle Bolton, followed by a brewery tour in Masham before settling in for the night.

Today explores the quieter side of Yorkshire. Coverdale and Nidderdale feel open and elemental, with rocky crags, clear rivers and walking routes that see far fewer footsteps. In the afternoon, wander through the atmospheric ruins of Jervaulx Abbey, where arches frame sky and meadow. This was once home to one of the largest monastic cattle herds in medieval England, a reminder that these peaceful ruins were once a thriving working community.

The landscape shifts as we head into the North York Moors – one of the largest continuous expanses of heather moorland in England. Begin with a visit to the folk museum in Hutton le Hole, offering a vivid glimpse into rural life across centuries. After lunch in the village pub, we walk up onto open moorland towards Blakey Ridge, where views stretch in all directions and landmarks like Ralph’s Cross punctuate the horizon. Finish the day with tea by the fire at the Lion Inn.

A short transfer brings you to Glaisdale and the North York Moors Railway, where boilers, fireboxes, piston and steam are the order of the day. We board the train for the journey to Grosmont where we alight. After lunch, continue to Whitby Abbey, dramatically perched above the North Sea. From here, the coast path winds into Robin Hood’s Bay, revealing wide skies, seabirds and the first salty air of the journey.

After breakfast, transfer into York where the tour concludes. From here, return south to London or continue northwards to Edinburgh. Of course, you could also linger longer in York, where time reveals layers of history, from Roman walls to medieval streets and Viking echoes beneath the pavement. We will happily help shape what comes next.
