The Brecons hold a special place in many walkers’ hearts. This is a wildly beautiful landscape of waterfalls and gorges, rugged terrain and remote valleys, and it offers some of the best walking in the British Isles. Not only that, the Brecons are an International Dark Sky Reserve. Look up, and you may see meteors, the Milky Way, and shooting stars.

And the beauty below ground is no less astonishing, with a system of caves and caverns that date back 330 million years. Bannau Brycheiniog, the Welsh name for the Brecon Beacons National Park, a 520-mile listed landscape that includes the legendary peaks of Pen y Fan and Fan y Big, as well as numberless stone circles and burial chambers and some medieval castles to keep the English at bay.

Luckily, the locals are far friendlier now. As are the wild Welsh ponies that you meet, grazing up above the cloudline.
